The wonderful Mexican black turtle bean, known as Tampico and Turtle Soup, is common throughout Latin America. This variety is grown as a string bean because the pods stay tender for a long time, but its main purpose is as a dry bean with high-quality kernels, indispensable in many Mexican dishes such as soups, burritos and vegetarian chili. The small black beans are about the size of a pea with a rich flavor and a fleshy texture rich in antioxidants due to their color. This hardy bean ripens mid-season. It takes about 100 days from germination to harvest the dry seeds, with the pods harvested after 60 days. A semi-bush variety, producing a spreading bush about a yard (91 cm) tall, with the pods high above the ground. It is advisable to support the plants with a net or stakes, this will increase the yield. This bean is heat tolerant, disease resistant, very productive and reliable even in the north! An improved variety selected in the cold conditions of Montana, but originally harvested in rural Mexico.
