Piel de Sapo melon literally means "frog skin", it is so named for the similarity of the color of the fruit. This is a rare variety native to the Canary Islands, with a characteristic uneven dark green skin with yellow stripes and "cracks". The sweet fruit reaches a diameter of 20 cm and weighs 2 kg. The taste is refreshing, juicy and very sweet. The ripe melon tastes like melted ice cream. Like the Frog Princess, it will shed its skin, and underneath it will be a wonderful sweet, juicy, aromatic pulp from pale green to white.
The only downside to the Piela de Sapo melon is that it takes too long to ripen. You have to wait until it becomes a little soft, the "bottom" is softer, and the aroma appears. Then the melon will be ripe and delicious! Sometimes this melon becomes soft, fragrant, and delicious while still green, and sometimes when it turns completely yellow.
Piela de Sapo melon is recommended to be consumed fresh, as well as used to prepare fruit salads, snacks, and desserts.
This variety of melon is highly valued for its excellent taste and long shelf life, which is why in Europe this melon is often called Santa Claus melon for its ability to be stored for up to 1.5 months before Christmas.
